Ken had been debating with himself for most of the morning. Should he go talk to her, or shouldn't he? After his fifth cup of coffee, he heaved himself to his feet and started pacing, rubbing at his face every now and again. After the fifth trip around his office, he headed out the door, making sure to snag his gun on the way out. The idea of Ken arming himself in headquarters was odd, since he was still very much a hand to hand guy, but a quick look at him would tell anyone that he was on edge and more than a little tired.

Hand raised, he paused in front of Beckett's office, taking a deep breath before he knocked and poked his head in.

".... I need to talk to you."

Beckett's head snapped up at the knock. She waved Ken in, noting his attitude and his stance. The look on the man's face didn't belie his feelings, but Beckett had no clue where to start. This wasn't another flamethrower conversation.

She, for once, wished it was.

"Close the door, have a seat." Her voice was calm, but expectant as she stood to close the blinds in front of the window before returning to her own seat behind the desk.

He closed the door behind him, but sitting wasn't an option. No, he was back to pacing, hands stuffed in his pockets. It took him a moment before he stopped in front of her desk, gaze low.

"I've been having nightmares off and on since that jackass ate me, but he's right. He wasn't the one that killed me. I... remember everything. Saxon didn't kill me."

"I'm sorry?"

That was the last thing she'd expected to hear. That entire case was something that still raised her hackles, and now that Ken was bringing it up with new information, those hackles were straight up.

She knew Ken fairly well, trusted him to get the job done. But she didn't know him like her boys at home. And this wasn't sitting right with her right off the bat. "What do you mean you suddenly remember everything?"

Grunting, he rubbed his hands over his face once more, pacing again.

"Carling's promotion had to have triggered it. There isn't anything else I can think of... He's the one that did it, Chief. He's the one that killed me."

This was more than serious. Ray had been one of the angriest when they'd had to release Saxon. She couldn't believe that act was so believable.

"What exactly do you remember, Ken? I hate to ask, but this is a serious accusation you're giving me."

"I know it is and I wouldn't just fuck around with someone's life like this if I wasn't sure of what I remembered."

The brunette rubbed his hand along the back of his neck, scowling.

"I was out for a run and noticed him along the way. I stopped for a sec, just small talk. A few minutes in, he called me a poofter and I've heard that crap outta his mouth enough to know what he meant by that. Hell, Mamoru and I never made a point to hide our relationship around here, but he started in on that, calling me a fag and shit. He even asked me if all Japs took it up the ass like that, or just 'poofters like me'."

Ken paused, shaking his head as if to clear it.

"Not gonna lie. I got pissed off because that shit just isn't right, but he kept on. I told him to fuck off and started to walk away, but he hit me in the back of the head. When I turned around, I heard a gunshot and that's the last thing I remember, other than waking up dead."

She can't say that it doesn't sound like Ray, though it seems like an unusually proactive and enraged version of him. Kate was pretty sure she'd only ever heard him mouth off and throw a punch or three.

"Okay," she said as she wrote down Ken's witness account. "We'll need to open up the case again, you'll need to give your account so we can run it by the old one. Get as much as you can remember in detail down in a report - date, times, everything."

Well, she had found the office, assuming that Castle's directions had been right, and she had no reason to suspect otherwise with him. Of course, even if she did, she had no other information to help her find the police force in this city. Everything that she had worked towards in Ankh-Morpork, and now it was all gone. She had to start over. While it was not the easiest thing she'd done, she'd certainly done things that were much harder. Fighting her brother, for one. She took a deep breath in, and knocked.

The knock was expected; Beckett was informed of the visitor and luckily had just set to go to lunch. The half an hour she took for herself was hardly a huge loss, if it meant gaining more help at the station.

"Yeah!" She yelled, signaling the open door.

She took the greeting that was, she carefully avoided using the term 'barked', shouted through the door, as an invitation in. She knew better than to immediately start looking around all over, as most people tend to do when they enter a room. She did, however, look around a little, and less obviously, without turning her head or moving her eyes. But that wasn't why she was here.

"Chief Beckett? Rick Castle told me about you. I'm new and I'd like to join the police force here. I'm Angua." Perfect-sounding delivery. Quick, informative, and as non-suspicious as she could muster.

Fresh meat was always welcome, and Beckett wasn't unfriendly -- she smiled and waved a hand at one of the seats in front of her.

"Angua, nice to have you in. Have a seat, we'll talk over what you bring to the table." As if Beckett had much of a choice. The force was smaller than she could risk saying no to new recruits for.

[ooc: You should go join the police community! There's a big honkin new guide that you can guinea pig test out for us! Join up, intro and let everyone know what you're hoping to get Angua doing or if you're unsure, list out her skills and ask for some input :3]

"Well, I've been on the Ankh-Morpork City Watch for around four years. I mainly do a lot of patrolling and suspect evaluation."

Beckett jots a few notes as Angua talks.

"Was that a standard police department? Just so I know what kind of experience you have; there are a good amount of experienced cops and other people on the force already. Most of the ones who join as rookies have supernatural or otherwise specialized knowledge."

Standard? Night Watch; six-foot-tall dwarf, troll, werewolf, dwarf that used female pronouns, zombie, and Nobby. "I think you'll need to re-define 'standard' a little, but yes. Searching out for the bad guys, putting them away, solving mysteries, and otherwise trying to keep the peace as much as we could." Supernatural? Well, now was as good a time as any, she supposed.

"Er, well. There is one more thing, actually."

[OoC: omg, I am SO so so sorry. I'll completely understand if you wanna drop this thread.]

"Here, standard is pretty much making arrests, doing paperwork and not harming the people we're trying to help. Just a baseline." Kate gives a mild laugh, acknowledging the more than abnormal circumstances the force found itself within the boundaries of the City.

Beckett doesn't continue, just nods to give Angua time to say whatever crazy thing she's done. Murderers, guys with claws, guys that can fly, guys from the 70s; what doesn't she have? More women will be nice, at least.

[ooc: That's totally fine, I'm a slowtagger myself ^^. I would suggest that we bendy time and state that the interview occurs in November, just to keep things smooth, if that works for you? We can bendytime forever about when Angua contacted the cops and got in and everything, to make it simpler. And don't forget to check out those links and join up and intro and all that, everyone's super nice at the comm. We can work out better details there, answer q's, etc. :D]

"I'm a werewolf." The same way as she said it when signing up for the Night Watch. Simple and straightforward.

[OoC: I approve of said timebending! That's perfect and yeah, I just joined [Unknown site tag], thanks!]

Oh. Right.

"A-- a werewolf." Well, that was a new one, at least. She wants to say something worthwhile, but in the end, Beckett just sighs, smiling. "I don't have the first idea of what that entails, I'm sorry."

Or what kinds of questions to ask, even.

She kept her face blank, having found that it tended to work best in these sort of situations. Beckett didn't seem to have a smile that non-verbally added 'but I'm going to kill you, anyway' to the end of her sentence. Always a good start.

On the other hand, she didn't seem to know what it was. So perhaps it was just that fact which kept her smiling.

Well, best to start with the basics, she supposed.

"It means that I can turn into a wolf when I choose to." Which was accurate, and described what a werewolf was perfectly well, minus that bit about it being really really hard to resist Changing during the full moon. Describing your race didn't mean you had to talk about what the rest of the Disc thought of you, or how your family makes it seem perfectly reasonable for them to hold those opinions* of werewolves.

*Those opinions sometimes being "torches and pitchforks".

Her eyebrows raise; it's not something Beckett's ashamed of showing anymore. She'd quickly learned to expect the usual, and she's not sure that this is any worse than anything else they've dealt with.

"Okay. You're going to get some unfortunate regular human stupid-questions from me, I'm sorry. I just think it's best to know as much as I can, within reason." She purses her lips together, and sighs again. Beckett really hated having to ask these questions, but her precinct's safety comes first. "I don't want to make assumptions based on stories and crap that I've heard from home. That's gotten me into more trouble than anything, so. If you want to give me a rundown of how this works? I need to put your potential coworkers' safety before everything else. Especially here, especially with what they do."

And really, Beckett's not sure there's any diplomatic way to ask these questions, so maybe it's just best to own up to being ignorant and doing what she can to work with it. "I come from a world without magic, or super powers or-- hell, reanimation. I'm a total blank slate, so go ahead and hit me with all your info."

This was most certainly different. It was a carefully thought out, logical, nonjudgmental, and strictly professional question. In other words, nothing like she'd experienced in Ankh-Morpork. The point was, though, that she was still a little taken aback at how well the Chief seemed to be taking this.

"Well, I can Change whenever I choose to. I usually try to avoid spending too much time as a wolf, if I can, but I am in control of myself when I am one. As far as the safety concerns of others, I've never had a problem back home." A pause, how to phrase this? "When the moon's full, I'll be disappearing. I don't attack anyone, mind you, just chickens. Other than that, I'm able to be a policeman both as a human and a wolf."

Beckett jots down notes on the pad in front of her, nodding as Angua talks, to signal her to continue. At this point, the chief has attempted to stay open to all possibilities. To put the safety of the City before her own personal hang-ups and fears.

"Can I ask what drew you to become a police officer?" Now that the more superficial (in some ways) is out of the way, Beckett can get down to a real interview. She likes this part, learning about people and helping them assimilate into the family here.

She nods once, "Well, to be honest, when I moved to Ankh-Morpork, there were only a certain number of things that I could do as a woman. Craftsperson, Assassin, Cook, Policeman, or, um, Other Services." She continues, barely a trace of a blush on her.

"None of those others really seemed to suit me, or what I wanted do do. I wanted to protect people." It sounded corny, but the unsaid 'after what I've seen and done' hangs from her tongue, caught in the back of her teeth.
